Golden Week
April 29th is Japan's National holiday, Midori no hi. This day leads Japan into Golden Week, a succession of holidays. When Saturdays and Sundays are included, this week becomes one of the longest holidays of the year. The weather is warm and suitable for excursions at this time, therefore many Japanese make trips during Golden Week and it is one of the busiest travel times.
Midori no hi (Greenery Day) April 29: It used to be the celebration of the birthday of the late Emperor Showa. After his death in 1989, it was designated as a day for the appreciation of nature. It was decided to change the name of this day to "Showa no hi" as of 2007.
Kenpo kinenbi (Constitution Day) May 3: The present Constitution of Japan was put into effect on this day in 1947.
Kokumin no kyujitsu (National Holiday) May 4: It was decided that this day should be a national holiday because it falls between two holidays.
Kodomo no hi (Children's Day) May 5: A day to wish for the health and happiness of children.
* Some companies give employees a day off on May 1, which is May Day.
April 29 (Sat) Greenery Day (みどりの日 ) May 1 (Mon) May Day (メーデー ) May 3 (Wed) Constitution Day (憲法記念日 ) May 4 (Thu) National Holiday (国民の休日 ) May 5 (Fri) Children's Day (子供の日 )
The day between two holidays is also considered a holiday.

May 5 is Japan's national holiday, Kodomo no hi (Children's day). People express hope that each boy in the family will grow up healthy and strong by flying Koinobori (carp-shaped streamers).
Here is the Koinobori song.
Yane yori takai koinobori Ookii magoi wa otousan Chiisai higoi wa kodomotachi Omoshirosouni oyoideru
屋根より高い 鯉のぼり 大きい真鯉は お父さん 小さい緋鯉は 子供達 面白そうに 泳いでる
yane ( 屋根 ) = roof takai ( 高い ) = high ookii ( 大きい ) = big otousan ( お父さん ) = father chiisai ( 小さい ) = small kodomotachi ( 子供達 ) = children omoshiroi ( 面白い ) = enjoyable oyogu ( 泳ぐ ) = to swim
"Yori (より )" is a particle and used when comparing things. It translates into "than".
